Toys for Children Aged 10 to 12: The Definitive Guide to Getting It Right (2026)

Ten, eleven and twelve is a strange and wonderful age to buy gifts for. The child who loved fire engines and action figures is gone. In front of you is someone who argues about the rules, wants to win for real, compares their present with their friend's and can smell a toy "for little kids" a mile away. Getting it right at this age is an achievement, which is why this is the age band where most people go wrong.
At Híper Ocio we have been selling toys in Albox since 1923, and this is probably the age we are asked about most by parents, uncles and grandparents: "he's 11, he already has everything, what do I buy him?" The short answer is that at this age the toy that wins is the one that treats them as someone older, sets a real challenge and, if possible, is played or built together with someone else.
This guide is the fourth in our series by age, after ages 1 to 3, ages 3 to 5 and ages 6 to 9. It is written for the pre-teen years, with real examples we have in stock, real prices and a shopkeeper's advice, not brochure talk.
Updated in August 2026: what has changed this season
Updated in August 2026. We have published a complementary guide, more focused on products and real stock: Toys for children aged 10 to 12: 2026 guide to getting it right at the hardest age, with August 2026 prices and the five mistakes we see most often at the counter.
What has changed since we wrote this guide: in construction, the LEGO Speed Champions 2026 (€25.99) have taken over a good share of the €25-30 gift in this age band, and the LEGO Technic Ferrari FXX K (42212), 897 pieces for €57.99, has replaced the Bugatti Bolide as our most recommended entry-level Technic. On the gaming side, the one to beat this school year is the LEGO Fortnite Entrega de suministros (77080), at €38.99.
In board games, short-game titles have gained ground over long strategy games: Exploding Kittens (€19.99) and Virus! Marvel (€14.99) are now our first recommendation for the child who doesn't come from a board-game-playing household. We have also added folding two-wheel aluminium scooters, such as the Mondo Dragon Ball (€34.99), which completely replace three-wheel models at this age.
What changes at 10-12 (and why the typical gift falls flat)
At this age the brain takes a leap: abstract thinking appears, along with the ability to plan several moves ahead and a much greater tolerance for well-measured frustration. In terms of toys, that means three things.
First, they look for a real challenge. A 200-piece set that they put together in ten minutes bores them; one with 900 pieces and a working mechanism keeps them hooked for a whole afternoon. Second, they value status and identity: they choose by interests (football, cars, Star Wars, science, gaming) rather than by "kids' toy". And third, social play gains weight: board games with friends, team challenges, friendly competition.
The classic mistake is to give them something too childish for fear that it will be "too complicated", or to go straight to a screen. What really works at 10-12 are toys that respect their intelligence: advanced construction, strategy, STEM and creativity with a tangible result.
Construction and LEGO: the step up to Technic and bigger sets
If there is one category that grows with them, it is construction. At 10-12 a child is ready to leave simple themed sets behind and move on to LEGO Technic, the line with gears, steering, suspension and mechanisms that work. It is not just building: it is understanding how a car works on the inside.
Our recommended entry-level Technic for 2026 is the Ferrari FXX K (42212), 897 pieces for €57.99, with a visible V12 engine and working steering. If the child is more into space, the NASA Artemis Rocket (42221), also at €57.99, reproduces the three real separation stages of the launcher.
And not everything has to be Technic. A fan of a particular saga will appreciate a set with a story, and at this age video game licence sets work very well: the LEGO Minecraft Ataque del Jinete Avícola en el Desierto (21592), at €22.99, or the Jurassic World Huida del Spinosaurus (77982), 820 pieces for €67.99, as a big gift. Shop tip: at this age, a set with a function (one that moves, shoots or rolls) is better than one that is only decorative.
How to choose the size of the set
A rule we give at the counter: for ages 10-12, aim for sets of 500 pieces or more. Below that they quickly outgrow them. If it is their first time with Technic, start with a €40-60 model before jumping to the big ones (which go over €150 and are more kidult territory, which we cover in our guide to LEGO for adults).
Board games that really hook them at this age
If we had to recommend a single category for ages 10-12, it would be this one. The modern board game is, for us, the best possible gift at this age: it gets them off the screen, makes them think, is played as a family and lasts for years. And by 10-12 they have the head for real strategy.
To start with: 15-20 minute games
If the child doesn't come from a board-game-playing household, don't start with anything complex. Exploding Kittens (€19.99) can be explained in three minutes, and Virus! Marvel (€14.99) is speed, humour and a competitive streak. They are the two that parents buy again most often.
Strategy and deduction
Devir's Codenames (€24.99) is a spy game: giving and guessing one-word clues, ideal for parents against children and suitable for 2 to 8 players. For the child who likes sparks and bluffing, Bang! The Bullet! by Asmodee (€35.99) puts secret roles in the Wild West. And Azul (€42.99) is the one that works best with the child who says that "board games bore them".
Adventure and family
Ticket to Ride Europe by Asmodee (€44.99) mixes geography and railway routes with very easy rules, Dixit Classic (€29.99) is the best when there is a big age gap around the table, and Party & Co. Original (€26.99) is still the one that fails least at a large family gathering.
Radio control and the street
At 10-12 children already go out to the square on their own, and radio control is one of the few toys that gives them status in front of their friends. The Ninco 6 Wheelers Nincoracers (€44.99) is a six-wheel off-roader that stands up to dirt and gravel, which is no minor detail around here. The Ninco Sonic Moto Radiocontrol (€44.99) is the alternative for those who are more into the character.
Honest warning: batteries run down much faster than the box suggests. Plan on buying rechargeable ones from the start.
STEM and curiosity: science and nature
Ages 10-12 are the golden age for sparking vocations. At this age they already understand an experiment, follow long instructions and enjoy the "why" of things. Clementoni's La ciudad de las hormigas (€21.99) is a real transparent ant farm that you look after for months, not a toy for one afternoon. It is one of those gifts that seem "serious" and that is why they love them: they feel they are being treated as older.
If you are torn between a STEM toy and a "play" toy, our recommendation is to combine them: a board game for shared leisure and something scientific or constructive for curious afternoons. It is the mix that holds up best over the school year.
Puzzles and creativity: concentration you don't notice
The puzzle is enjoying a second youth, and at 10-12 it is an underrated gift: it teaches patience and observation, and gives a result that can be framed. At this age they can already handle serious challenges. The Educa 1,500-piece political world map puzzle (€14.99) is our favourite for this age band, and the 1,000-piece Van Gogh Starry Night puzzle (€9.99) combines art and challenge for very little money.
Alongside the puzzle, any craft kit with a finished result fits well: at this age they value making something they can show off and give away. The K-Pop Demon Hunters Pen Creator Studio (€24.99) makes five pens that then go off to secondary school, and the Clementoni Taller de Alfarería (€31.99) comes with a real potter's wheel.
Back to school: gifts with a double function
We are in the middle of the back-to-school season, and it is a good time to give gifts wisely. The idea that works best at 10-12 is the gift with a double function: it entertains and, along the way, reinforces something from the school year. A strategy game works on mental arithmetic; Ticket to Ride, geography; the ant farm, natural sciences; a puzzle, sustained attention.
If you are going to buy several gifts (a classmate's birthday, a reward for good marks, a September kit), combining a medium-sized board game with a STEM gift covers almost any taste and budget without repeating what they already have.
How much to spend and how to pay
To guide you with real shop prices as of August 2026: a good small gift at this age costs between €15 and €30 (a medium-sized board game, a good puzzle, a small LEGO set); an important gift, between €35 and €60 (entry-level Technic, radio control, a large board game, a scooter). Only premium LEGO Technic sets and collectibles go above that.
If the important gift is over your budget, at Híper Ocio you can pay in instalments with Klarna. And for toys there is free shipping within Spain on orders over €49.99, so adding a second gift often makes sense.
Why Híper Ocio
We are a family toy and general shop in Albox (Almería), founded in 1923, now in its fourth generation with Antonio Martínez Rosado at the helm. We belong to the Toy Planet chain and are an authorised official retailer of LEGO, Cayro, Devir, Asmodee, Panini and Toimsa, among others. That means official products and guarantee, not odd imports.
To be honest: we are not the biggest website or the cheapest on everything. What we do have is judgement (we will tell you if a game will be too easy for them or if a set is too much for their age) and a real physical shop, on Avenida 28 de Febrero in Albox, where you can handle a toy before buying it. We ship toys all over Spain; and if you have doubts about a particular gift, you can write to us on WhatsApp at 623 04 44 20 and we will help you choose. Returns are accepted within 30 days under our returns policy.
Frequently asked questions
What should I buy an 11-year-old who "already has everything"?
Go for something that treats them as older and challenges them: a LEGO Technic with a working mechanism, a board game such as Codenames or Ticket to Ride, or a science kit. At this age they prefer one good gift with a challenge to several simple toys.
Do children still play with LEGO at 10-12?
Yes, and a lot. It is the ideal age to move on from simple themed sets to LEGO Technic, with real gears and steering. Many adult fans (kidults) started at exactly this age.
What is the best first board game for this age?
If they don't come from a board-game-playing household, Exploding Kittens or Virus! Marvel, because they can be explained in three minutes. If they already have some experience, Codenames is the one that works best for mixing children and adults at the same table.
How much should I spend on a gift for a child aged 10-12?
A good small gift costs around €15-30 and an important gift, €35-60. Only premium LEGO sets and collectibles go above that. At Híper Ocio you can pay in instalments with Klarna.
Do you ship toys all over Spain?
Yes. Toys and small items have shipping within Spain, free on orders over €49.99. (Household appliances and televisions are only delivered in the Almanzora area, Levante Almeriense and Los Vélez, with our own van.)
Are STEM toys good gifts at this age?
Excellent ones. At 10-12 they already understand experiments and enjoy the "why". An ant farm, a chemistry kit or a telescope can spark a vocation, and they have the advantage of being seen as "serious" gifts, something that is highly valued at this age.
