The Best Toys for Children Aged 1 to 3: A Guide to Getting It Right (2026)

· Updated on 13 October 2026

LEGO DUPLO Classic Caja de Ladrillos Deluxe, juguete recomendado para niños de 1 a 3 años

When a child is between one and three, play is not just entertainment: it is the tool they use to learn to move, talk, count and understand their own emotions. At this age the brain develops at a speed it will never match again, and a good toy supports that development rather than simply making noise and flashing lights. That is why choosing well matters so much.

At Híper Ocio we have been selling toys in Albox since 1923, and one of the questions parents, grandparents and uncles and aunts ask us most is exactly this: "what can I give a little one of this age that will really be useful?". In this guide we tell you what to look for (and what to avoid) at each stage, with specific examples of toys we have in real stock, their prices and what each one is for.

You will not find a generic list copied from the internet here. These are products we have in the shop, that we have seen work with hundreds of families in the Almanzora valley, and that meet European safety standards for these ages. Let's get to it.

LEGO DUPLO Classic Deluxe Brick Box 10914 for children from 18 months

What changes between ages 1, 2 and 3 (and why it matters when choosing)

Although we talk about "1 to 3 years" as a single block, there are huge differences within that range. A toy that a three-year-old loves can frustrate (or even be dangerous for) a twelve-month-old. These are the key points for each stage:

From 12 to 18 months: body and movement

The little one has just started walking or is about to. What they need are toys that reward movement: pushing, pulling, putting things in and taking them out. Gross motor skills come first. Pieces should be large (nothing that fits in the mouth and could be swallowed) and able to withstand chewing and knocks.

From 18 months to 2 and a half years: hands and imitation

Pretend play appears: the child imitates what they see at home. They love fitting things together, stacking, opening and closing. This is where the first large building sets, simple role-play toys and anything with a clear cause and effect come in.

From 2 and a half to 3 years: the first abstract ideas

Numbers, letters, colours and, above all, emotions begin. The child can already build towers, follow simple instructions and enjoy games with a minimal rule. It is the ideal time for educational toys that prepare the ground for nursery school.

Building sets: the star toy at this age

If we had to recommend just one type of toy for this age group, it would be large-piece building sets. They develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, patience and creativity, and they grow with the child: the same box works at 18 months and at 4 years, only what is built with it changes.

The LEGO DUPLO range is designed for exactly this. The pieces are twice the size of normal LEGO, they cannot fit in the throat and they fit together easily even for small hands. Two options we recommend to start with:

  • The LEGO DUPLO Brick Box (10913), at €27.99, is the classic starting point: basic coloured pieces for free building, with no instructions to follow. Ideal from 18 months.
  • The LEGO DUPLO Deluxe Brick Box (10914), at €47.99, steps things up: more pieces, windows, wheels and figures, and a storage box that helps keep the living room from ending up strewn with bricks. It is our recommendation if you want a single box that lasts for years.

If you are looking for a cheaper alternative with a great many pieces, the Block Planet Large Crate with 550 pieces (€19.99) is compatible with LEGO-type bricks and comes in a very practical stackable crate. For the youngest children it needs supervision, because it includes a variety of pieces.

LEGO DUPLO Mickey and Minnie Birthday Train 10941

Pretend play: trains, characters and scenes

From the age of two, children want to "tell stories" with their toys. Themed sets with familiar characters are perfect because they combine building with role play. The LEGO DUPLO Mickey and Minnie Birthday Train (10941), at €32.99, is one of our best sellers: the train really rolls, can be put together and taken apart, and includes Mickey, Minnie and Pluto. It works as a first introduction to building sets with a character the little one already recognises.

Along the same lines, the Peppa Pig Birthday House (10433), at €44.99, recreates a whole party with cake, balloons and presents. Peppa is a magnet at this age and the set gives plenty of scope for imitation: laying the table, blowing out the candles, opening the presents.

Educational toys: numbers, letters and emotions

Around the age of three it is time to introduce concepts without it feeling like "homework". The key is for the learning to be hidden inside the play. These are three that work especially well:

  • The LEGO DUPLO Number Train (10954), at €18.99, is one of the most complete for its price: the child counts the carriages, puts them in order and starts to link quantity with numeral. A first taste of maths through play.
  • The LEGO DUPLO Alphabet Truck (10421), at €38.99, does the same with letters: each brick shows a letter and a picture, so the little one starts to get familiar with the alphabet by handling the pieces.
  • The Toy Planet wooden Magnetic Alphabet and Numbers, at €11.99, is the most affordable and durable option: magnetic letters and numerals to stick on the fridge or a board. One of the toys with the best value for use that we have.

Emotional intelligence deserves a special mention, as parents ask for it more and more. The LEGO DUPLO Big Feelings and Emotions (10415), at €29.99, uses figures with interchangeable faces so the child can identify joy, anger or sadness. It is a simple tool for talking about emotions with a little one who cannot yet put names to them.

Movement and the outdoors: ride-ons and first games

Moltó 4x4 ride-on with parent handle and tray from 12 months

Summer and the early years call for toys that get children moving. The Moltó 4x4 Ride-on with parent handle (13239), at €51.99, is a workhorse: it can be used from 12 months (with the handle, an adult pushes it) and then, once the little one walks confidently, they drive it alone using their feet. It includes a tray and is very stable, so it stands up to the daily rough and tumble.

For those approaching three who are starting to tolerate very simple rules, the Cayro Children's Dominoes (8106), at €14.99, is an ideal first board game: instead of numbers it uses large, colourful pictures, so the child learns to match, wait their turn and play with others. It is made by the Spanish brand Cayro, of which we are an official stockist.

Common mistakes when buying at this age (and how to avoid them)

After so many years behind the counter, we see the same slip-ups time and again. Make a note of these:

  • Buying for an older age "so it lasts". A toy with small pieces at 18 months will not last: it goes in the mouth and ends up put away. Respect the manufacturer's recommended age, which is there for safety, not on a whim.
  • Too much electronics. Lights and sounds hook children at first, but they tire of them quickly. "Open-ended" toys (building sets, shape sorters) last for years because every day the play is different.
  • Forgetting storage. A box like the one in the DUPLO Deluxe saves arguments and helps the little one learn to tidy up. It seems a small detail and it is not.
  • Giving lots of toys at once. Better a few good ones. Too many overwhelm the child, who never gets deeply into any of them.

Why Híper Ocio

We are not a large superstore or an anonymous warehouse. We are a family shop in Albox, now in its fourth generation, with Antonio Martínez Rosado at the helm, and we are part of the Toy Planet chain as well as an official stockist of LEGO, Cayro, Toimsa, Panini, Asmodee, Devir and Ninco. That means what we sell is original product with a guarantee, not imitations.

For toys and small household appliances we offer free delivery across Spain on orders over €49.99, and everything in the catalogue you see online we have (barring an occasional stock shortage) in the physical shop on Avenida 28 de Febrero, in Albox, where you can see and touch it before buying. If you are torn between two options for a little one, we will genuinely advise you, because we know every product. Returns are accepted within 30 days under our returns policy, and if you would like to spread the payment you can pay in instalments with Klarna.

If you would rather ask us before deciding, message us on WhatsApp at 623 04 44 20 and we will help you choose according to the child's age and tastes.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can a child play with LEGO DUPLO?

The DUPLO range is designed from 18 months, although some simple sets are recommended from 24 months. The pieces are large precisely so that they do not pose a choking risk, unlike those of classic LEGO (from 4-6 years).

Which educational toy is best for starting with numbers?

For a first introduction we recommend the LEGO DUPLO Number Train (€18.99), because the child counts and sorts by handling pieces. If you are looking for something cheaper and for the fridge, the Toy Planet wooden magnetic numbers (€11.99) do the job very well.

Do toys for ages 1 to 3 come with free delivery?

Yes. On toys and small household appliances we offer free delivery across Spain on orders over €49.99. Below that amount the standard delivery charge applies.

Can I pay for a toy order in instalments?

Yes: at checkout you can choose Klarna, which shows you the instalment options available for your purchase before you confirm. You can find out more on our financing page.

How many toys should I give at this age?

Few, and well chosen. A child aged 1 to 3 gets far more out of two or three "open-ended" toys (building sets, shape sorters, a ride-on) than out of a mountain of toys they barely use. The quality and variety of play matter more than quantity.

Can I see the toys in the shop before buying?

Of course. We have a physical shop at Avenida 28 de Febrero s/n, in Albox (Almería), where you can see and touch the product. What appears online we also have in the shop, barring an occasional stock shortage.
