If you live in the Almanzora Valley, in Eastern Almería, or in any town in the province of Almería, you already know what we're talking about: July and August here are not just hot, they're something else entirely. Thermometers that exceed 40°C for weeks, nights that don't drop below 28°C, and thermal sensations that turn air conditioning from a luxury into a basic necessity.
The question we get most often at Híper Ocio before buying a unit is always the same: "Antonio, how many frigories do I need for my room?" In this guide, we explain everything, with numbers adjusted to our particular climate, not that of a northern city.
A frigorie (kcal/h) is the unit that measures the cooling capacity of an air conditioner. The more frigories a unit has, the more power it has to lower the temperature of a space. If you choose a unit with too few frigories for your room, it will work at maximum capacity all the time, break down sooner, consume more energy, and won't cool effectively. If you choose too many, the cycle is too short, and humidity is not properly removed.
The key is balance: the right unit for the space you want to cool.
The standard calculation you'll see on many websites refers to 80-100 frigories per square meter. In Almería, that calculation falls short. Our province has one of the hottest and driest climates in continental Europe. In the Almanzora Valley and the Levante region—Albox, Cantoria, Cuevas del Almanzora, Vera, Huércal-Overa, Garrucha, Zurgena—extreme summer temperatures demand an additional margin.
At Híper Ocio, with over a hundred years of selling and installing equipment in the region, we use this reference:
| Type of space | Frigories per m² | Almería correction factor |
|---|---|---|
| Shady room, ground floor | 90 kcal/h | ×1.0 |
| Room with direct sun or first floor | 100 kcal/h | ×1.1 |
| Attic or under roof (loft) | 120 kcal/h | ×1.3 |
| Commercial premises or warehouse | 130+ kcal/h | ×1.4+ |
2,000-2,200 frigories. A unit of this power is quiet, very efficient, and perfect for a comfortable night's sleep. Indoor noise is usually below 32 dB, which significantly improves sleep quality. The best-selling model in this range in our store is the Beko BEHPG095, at €309, with inverter, WiFi, and R32 gas.
2,500-3,000 frigories. The most balanced range between price and performance. If the living room has south or west-facing windows and gets afternoon sun, go straight for 3,000. The Beko BEHPG125 (€329) more than covers this range and is the unit we install most often in the region.
3,500-4,500 frigories. For large spaces, open-plan kitchens integrated with the living room, or entire floors. Here, the Beko BEHPG185 (€599) or the 4,500-frigorie models from Hisense and Infiniton are the most suitable options.
Add 30% to any previous calculation. The roof accumulates heat all day and radiates it at night. It's the most difficult space to air condition and requires the most power. Don't skimp here.
The calculation by square meters is a starting point, but there are variables that can significantly modify it:
South or west orientation: Rooms that receive afternoon sun in summer need 10 to 15% more power. In Almanzora, the late afternoon sun in August is relentless.
Ceiling height: Standard calculations assume 2.5 m. If you have ceilings of 3 m or more (old village houses, for example), add 15%.
Number of people usually in the space: Each person generates heat equivalent to about 100 W. In a living room where the whole family usually gathers, add this to the calculation.
Appliances and heat sources: An open kitchen to the living room adds considerable heat. A room with many electronic devices also.
Building insulation: Modern houses with double glazing and good insulation need less power. Old masonry houses, uninsulated, need more.
Not all of Almería province is the same. Within the Almanzora Valley and the Levante region, there are significant differences:
Albox, Cantoria, Fines, Arboleas, Zurgena: Inland continental, with very hot and dry summers. Maximum temperatures exceed 42-44°C on some days in July and August. Here, we always recommend going for the higher power range for each room.
Cuevas del Almanzora, Vera, Antas, Bédar: Transition zone between the interior and the Levante coast. Intense heat but slightly tempered by Mediterranean influence. Standard calculations with the Almería factor are sufficient.
Garrucha, Mojácar, Pulpí: Coastal Levante. The sea breeze somewhat dampens temperature peaks, but relative humidity is higher. Air conditioning here has a dual function: cooling and dehumidifying.
Huércal-Overa: Regional capital with characteristics similar to the interior of Almanzora. Dry and very hot summer. Higher power units are very popular here.
An inverter unit continuously adjusts its power to maintain the desired temperature, instead of constantly turning on and off. In a climate like ours, where the unit works many hours a day for several months, the difference in electricity consumption can be up to 40% compared to a conventional on/off unit.
All units we sell at Híper Ocio are inverter. Not because it's a trend, but because in this region, it provides a real and measurable economic return.
At Híper Ocio, we work with brands that offer the best value for money and for which we have technical support in the area:
Beko — Excellent price-performance ratio. Extended warranty available. Very good energy efficiency (A++). Ideal for intensive domestic use.
Infiniton — Spanish technology brand. Great value for money, WiFi included across the range, and national technical support. One of the best-selling options in our store.

Standard installation at Híper Ocio includes 3 meters of copper piping, refrigerant gas, wall bracket for the outdoor unit, and commissioning. The price of standard installation in the region is around €160-180, depending on access and height.
If you need more meters of piping, to go through masonry walls, or install at difficult heights, we will provide you with a personalized quote without obligation. Call us or text us on WhatsApp at 625 325 295 before buying if you have doubts about the installation.
How many frigories for a 15 square meter room in Albox?
For a 15 m² room in an inland area like Albox, with direct sun, we recommend a 2,500-3,000 frigorie unit. If it's an attic or gets afternoon sun, go for 3,000 without hesitation.
How many frigories to cover a 30 square meter living room?
A 30 m² living room in the region needs between 3,000 and 3,500 frigories under normal conditions. If it's on a top floor under the roof or has south-facing windows, go up to 4,500.
What does a 3,000 frigorie air conditioner consume?
A modern 3,000 frigorie inverter unit has a nominal power of about 900W, but at full performance, it can reach 1,200W. At half load (most common), it consumes around 500-600W. In one hour of full-load use, it's less than €0.07 at the current average electricity price in Spain.
Can I install the air conditioner myself?
No. The installation of split units requires a certified installer with a fluorinated gas handler's license (F-Gas). Additionally, without correct installation, the manufacturer's warranty may be voided. At Híper Ocio, we work with certified installers from the region.
Is a split or a portable unit better for a room in Almería?
For a room in regular use during summer, always a split. Portable units are less efficient, noisier, and need to vent hot air outside somehow (tube through the window), which compromises some efficiency. A portable unit makes sense for temporary situations or when an outdoor unit cannot be installed.
How long does installation take?
A standard installation (without major construction) takes 2-3 hours. If you need to go through partition walls or there are access difficulties, it could be a full day. Contact us, and we'll give you a realistic estimate before starting.
Does the air conditioner also heat in winter?
Yes. All units we sell have a heat pump, which allows them to both cool in summer and heat in winter. And they are much more efficient than an electric radiator: for every kilowatt consumed, they generate 3-4 kilowatts of heat. In mild winters like ours in the region, it is the most efficient climate control solution available.
We've been in Albox for over a hundred years and know the houses, the climate, and the needs of every corner of the Almanzora Valley and Eastern Almería. If you have doubts about which unit you need, text us on WhatsApp at 625 325 295 or call us at 950 430 738. We'll advise you without obligation and tell you exactly what you need.
You can also visit the store by appointment (Avenida 28 de Febrero s/n, Albox, next to Lidl and Aldi) and we can calculate it for you based on a floor plan if you have one.
