Sandwich Maker: What to Check Before Buying in 2026 (Orbegozo Comparison)

Sandwichera Orbegozo SW 5000 con placas antiadherentes triangulares

Every September the same thing happens in the shop: someone comes in looking for "that sandwich toaster, the old-fashioned kind" and leaves with an Orbegozo sandwich maker without having asked a single question about power, plates or size. That is fine, they are simple, forgiving appliances. But there are two or three things worth checking before you pay, because not all sandwich makers do the same job or last as long.

At Híper Ocio we have been selling small kitchen appliances for years alongside air conditioners and toys (yes, we have been this varied since 1923), and the sandwich maker is one of those products that rarely gives any trouble if you choose well from the start. Here we explain which types there are, what to look for, and which of the two models we stock you should go for, depending on how you plan to use it.

Orbegozo SW 5000 sandwich maker with triangular non-stick plates

What is a sandwich maker and what is it really for?

A sandwich maker is basically two shaped metal plates that heat from both sides and seal the bread while it toasts and melts whatever is inside. The difference from an ordinary toaster is that the bread is sealed at the edges, so you can fill it with runny or messy things (melted cheese, tomato, scrambled egg) without it all leaking out of the sides.

It is designed for quick meals: breakfasts before rushing off to school, back-to-school snacks, "I can't be bothered to cook" dinners, or the classic sandwich after training. It does not replace a frying pan or an oven, but for what it does (sandwiches, closed toasties and a few extras we cover below) it is faster and cleaner than almost any alternative.

Types of sandwich maker: closed triangular, flat plates and 3-in-1 grill

Not all sandwich makers are the same, and it is worth knowing which family you are looking at before comparing prices:

Closed triangular sandwich maker. The classic: it seals sliced bread on all four sides and cuts it into two triangles. Ideal if you want nothing to escape from the filling and you plan to eat the sandwich with your hands, without a plate. This is the format of our Orbegozo SW 5000.

Square or flat-plate sandwich maker. It leaves the typical grid pattern on the bread without sealing the edges as tightly. It works for sandwiches, but also for heating other flat things (a quesadilla, a pancake) without them being so "sealed". This is the case with the Orbegozo SW 4915.

Grill or 3-in-1 sandwich maker. These have interchangeable plates (sandwich, flat grill and waffle, for example) that multiply the uses, but also the price and the space they take up in the cupboard. If you only make sandwiches, it is overspending; if you also want to make waffles or griddle some meat now and then, it may be worth it. At Híper Ocio we currently stock the classic triangular and flat-plate formats, which cover 90% of the real uses we see in the shop.

What to check before buying: power, plates, closure and cleaning

There is not much mystery with sandwich makers, but these five points make the difference between an appliance that lasts for years and one that ends up in the storage room:

Power. Between 700 and 900 W is the normal range for home use. Below 700 W it takes longer to heat up and the bread can end up lukewarm inside before it browns outside; more than 900 W adds little for a sliced-bread sandwich and simply uses more electricity.

Non-stick plates. This is practically standard now, but check whether the plates are fixed or removable. Removable ones are much easier to clean (they go under the tap, or even in the dishwasher on some models), whereas fixed ones have to be cleaned with a cloth when the sandwich maker is cold, and it must never be submerged in water.

Closing system and indicator light. A latch stops the sandwich from opening halfway through if the bread is very full. The temperature light (which tells you when it is ready) is a small but useful detail, especially if different people at home will be using it.

Size of bread it takes. Triangular models are usually designed for standard sliced bread; if you buy larger bread at home or cut slices from a loaf, check the plate measurements before buying, because bread that is too big will not close properly and the filling will escape at the sides.

Cable and storage. A minor but real detail: if you are going to keep it in a low cupboard, look at the length of the cable and whether it has a cord wrap. In small kitchens this is appreciated.

Orbegozo SW 5000 vs Orbegozo SW 4915: an honest comparison

At Híper Ocio we have these two Orbegozo models in stock. Orbegozo is a brand that works well for us in small appliances, for its price and for the spare parts available if you ever need them. Here is the comparison without frills:

Model Orbegozo SW 5000 Orbegozo SW 4915
Price €24.95 €14.99
Power 800 W 700-800 W
Plate shape Triangular, sealed at the edges Square, non-stick
Finish Non-stick with triangular sealing Non-stick, white
Best for Classic old-fashioned sandwiches, to eat with your hands More versatile use (sandwich, flat toastie, quesadilla)

Orbegozo SW 4915 sandwich maker with square non-stick plates

The price difference between the two (10 euros) is mainly down to the shape of the plate and the triangular sealing of the SW 5000, which is a little better at stopping drips. If your favourite filling at home is melted cheese or anything that escapes easily, the SW 5000 will give you fewer surprises. If you just want to heat and toast without any complications, the SW 4915 does the same job for less money.

Ideas beyond the classic sandwich

A sandwich maker offers more than it seems at first glance. Here are some ideas from customers who already have one:

Banana and egg pancakes (no flour) come out well sealed and do not stick if the plate is non-stick. Wheat tortilla quesadillas with cheese and a little chicken or vegetables, closed like a triangular sandwich. Filled pitta bread, which benefits from the edge sealing. And the classic emergency option: sliced bread with butter and sugar or chocolate on the outside so it comes out crisp and caramelised, for when you fancy something sweet in a hurry.

Care and cleaning to make it last

Always let it cool completely before cleaning it, because hot non-stick coating scratches more easily. Use a damp cloth or a soft sponge, never a metal scourer or pointed objects to lift off residue, because you will scratch the plate and that is when everything starts to stick. If your model has removable plates, take them out and wash them separately; if they are fixed, an old toothbrush fits well into the grooves of the grid. And never submerge it in water or put the whole thing in the dishwasher: it is an electrical appliance, and the body and cable must stay dry.

Other small appliances for getting back into the routine

If you are equipping your kitchen for back-to-school or simply renewing your small appliances at home, two items that sell a lot alongside the sandwich maker at this time of year are the air fryer and the hand blender:

Taurus Air Fry Digital 7S View 6.5 litre oil-free air fryer

The Taurus Air Fry Digital 7S View (6.5 L, 1,600 W, with a window so you can see the food without opening the basket) is the one we are asked about most lately to go with quick breakfasts and snacks. If you would like to know more about choosing one according to how many of you there are at home, we have a complete guide to air fryers.

FLAMA 2063FL BlendUltra hand blender with measuring jug

For smoothies, creams or quick blending, the FLAMA 2063FL BlendUltra hand blender (1,500 W, titanium blades, 800 ml jug) is one of the most complete we have in the shop right now. If you would like to compare power and materials before deciding, here is our guide to choosing a hand blender.

Why Híper Ocio

We are not going to sell you the most expensive sandwich maker as if it were the best for no reason: for a breakfast sandwich, a well-cared-for €15-25 model lasts for years. What we can guarantee is that what you see on the product page is in our warehouse in Albox, not a dropshipping item with a catalogue photo. We ship small appliances free to all of Spain on purchases of €49.99 or more, and if you prefer to see and handle it before taking it home, our physical shop is at Avenida 28 de Febrero s/n, Albox, run by the fourth generation of the same family since 1923, so we know something about selling things people use every day. If you have any questions about delivery times or returns (30 days, according to our returns policy), you can write to us on WhatsApp at 623 04 44 20.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a sandwich maker take to heat a sandwich?
Between 3 and 5 minutes with the two Orbegozo models we have in the shop, depending on how much filling it has and whether the bread is frozen or not.

Can I use bread that is not sliced bread?
In the triangular model (SW 5000) it is best to stick to sliced bread, because it is designed for that size. The flat-plate model (SW 4915) gives you a little more room with other types of bread, as long as it is not very thick.

Can the plates be removed for washing?
On these two Orbegozo models the plates are fixed, so they are cleaned when the sandwich maker is cold, with a damp cloth or a soft brush in the grooves. They must not be submerged in water.

How much electricity does an 800 W sandwich maker use?
Very little in real use: a 4-5 minute sandwich is about 0.05-0.06 kWh, considerably less than an oven or even an ordinary toaster used several times.

What is the difference from an ordinary toaster?
A toaster toasts single slices inside its slots; a sandwich maker seals two slices at the edges with the filling inside. So it is no use for toasting plain bread, but it is perfect for hot sandwiches with cheese, ham or whatever you want to put in.

Can I make waffles with these sandwich makers?
No, these two models only have sandwich plates. For waffles you would need a dedicated appliance or one of the 3-in-1 models with interchangeable plates, which we do not currently have in the catalogue.
