Secret Santa gifts 2026 by budget: €10, €20 and €30

Juego de cartas Asmodee Dobble, idea de regalo para el amigo invisible por menos de 20 euros en Híper Ocio

The message lands in the office WhatsApp group one Tuesday in November, squeezed between one about the coffee machine and another about whether the bank holiday will turn into a long weekend. "This year we're doing Secret Santa, €20 limit, use the app so nobody cheats." You tap the button, the little wheel spins and stops on a name: someone from another department you have exchanged perhaps three sentences with so far this year. And that is where the usual dilemma begins. You don't know whether they read, whether they have children, whether they hate board games or live for them.

The same awkward moment comes round again at Christmas Eve dinner in Albox, when the folded slips of paper with the names are passed from hand to hand and suddenly you get the brother-in-law who wins at everything or the eight-year-old niece who never sits still. Secret Santa has two sides to it: the budget is small, you often don't know the person well and, on top of that, the present is opened in front of everyone. A miss shows, and people talk about it too.

We have been behind a shop counter watching presents being opened since 1923, and we can tell you one thing with confidence: with €10, €20 or €30 you can get it right with room to spare if you buy sensibly. In this guide we go through each budget in turn, with board games, puzzles, card games and small toys that genuinely get played. No hype. Just what we would choose ourselves if we drew that name.

Before you look at the price: three questions that save the present

The costliest mistake is not spending too little, it is buying without knowing where the present will end up. Spend a minute on these three questions before choosing anything. They will spare you more than one disappointment on the night.

  • Will it be played in a group or as a couple? An office Secret Santa with ten people is not the same as a swap between two people who live together. If the person will mostly play with one other person, there are titles designed for that; in that case our guide to board games for 2 players will serve you better than a general list.
  • Will it be opened in front of everyone? With Secret Santa, almost always. That rules out anything too personal and rewards what raises a smile there and then: a game that can be set up on the spot, a quick card game, something you understand at a glance.
  • Will there be children at the table? If it is a family swap and the little ones will be there, it is best to choose something that can be played with them or that, at the very least, does not come with a thirty-page rulebook. A game that brings adults and children together is worth twice as much.

Once you have clear answers to those three questions, the price bracket practically chooses itself.

Around €10: when it's the thought that counts

This is the most rewarding bracket and, at the same time, the one where throwaway presents most often slip in. For under €15 you will make a very good impression if you go for a well-known card game or a good puzzle, which is one of the few things at that price that lasts for years. These are our picks, with who they suit:

  • ¿Quién Soy? by Toy Planet (around €10): the classic game of guessing characters by asking questions. Suitable from six or seven years old, it takes half a minute to explain and at a dinner grandad and grandchild play it just the same. If you don't know what to give, it is safe ground.
  • Virus! by Tranjis (around €15): cards, ten-minute games and plenty of good-natured mischief. Two to six players, ages eight and up. It is one of those games that comes back out as soon as someone asks "shall we play something?".
  • Monster Kit by Tranjis (around €15): you build monsters by combining cards. For tables with children aged six and over, with an educational touch that never feels heavy, and very eye-catching when opened.
  • Educa Borrás 1,000-piece puzzle "Jardín Precioso" (around €10): for someone who enjoys a quiet moment. At that price, few things go as far, and it looks lovely once finished.
  • Ravensburger Puzzle 1000 Van Gogh "The Night Café" (around €12): Ravensburger-quality pieces, a firm fit and an image that begs to be framed. A sure hit for someone who already does puzzles and frames them.
  • Cayro Rummi Classic 711 (around €14): the Rummikub everyone knows, tiles and numbers. Two to four players and games that hook a teenager just as much as a grandmother. It never goes out of fashion.

If you have drawn someone you don't know at all

When the draw gives you someone you have barely spoken to, don't try to guess their tastes: go for something with broad appeal. Here Virus! and ¿Quién Soy? are two choices that are hard to get wrong, because they are well known, fun and suitable for any age. Nobody pulls a face when they open them, which is exactly what you want when buying blind.

Around €20: the sweet spot

This is the most common limit in offices and, in our view, the best value. With €20 you can already get a board game with a proper box or a construction set with plenty of play in it. Here you make a good impression without overstepping the mark:

  • Dobble by Asmodee (around €16): reflexes and symbols in a tin that fits in a pocket. Two to eight players, from six years old, and it can be played anywhere, including with the little ones. If you are torn between several, this is the wildcard.
  • LEGO Classic Creative Suitcase 10713 (around €19): loose bricks for free building, with a case to store them in. It works just as well for someone who already has LEGO as for a beginner, and it gets used for years. Official product, which with LEGO really shows.
  • Cayro Rummi Classic Grande 744 (around €23): the large version for up to six players. If it is a family Secret Santa and there are lots of you round the Christmas table, this one goes further than the small one.
  • Exploding Kittens Party Pack (around €25): the big-group version of the exploding kittens, for up to ten players. Cheeky, fast and made for when the table is full. It works wonderfully at dinners with friends.

Around €30: to really impress

With a €30 limit you can give one of those games that stays on the family shelf and comes out every Christmas. There is no need to search high and low: a good modern game is enough.

  • Carcassonne by Devir (around €29): one of the best for making the leap to modern board games. You build a landscape with tiles, the rules click after one game and there is plenty of strategy. Two to five players; ideal for someone who wants to start playing seriously without struggling with a rulebook.
  • Ticket to Ride: First Journey (around €33): the children's version of the classic train game, designed for ages six and up. For families with little ones who want a game that everyone genuinely enjoys, not just the adults.
  • Dixit Classic by Asmodee (around €33): beautifully illustrated cards and a game of imagining and guessing that brings any group together. Three to six players, and you don't need to be a keen gamer. One of the best for lingering round the table after a meal with a mixed group.
  • The Magic Labyrinth by Devir (around €35): memory and invisible walls hidden beneath the board. It has a touch of the magic trick about it that leaves children open-mouthed and hooks the adults too. A good bridge between generations.

Four mistakes we see every December (and what to give instead)

All sorts of things come across our counter at this time of year, and some mistakes repeat themselves year after year. If you avoid them, your present is already above the table average.

  • The throwaway present. The cheap novelty that gets looked at once and ends up in a drawer. For the same money, choose something that lasts: a 1,000-piece puzzle or a Rummi get used for years.
  • Going over the limit. Spending twice the agreed amount does not look better; it makes the rest of the group uncomfortable. Better to get it right within the bracket; that is why this guide is organised by fixed budgets, so you can shop with peace of mind without going over.
  • The "too original" present nobody understands. The very obscure game with a hundred pages of rules that never leaves the box. For a mixed table, go for something that takes half a minute to explain: Dobble or ¿Quién Soy?.
  • Not thinking about how it will be used. Buying without knowing whether it will be played in a group, as a couple or with children. For two, our guide to games for 2 players gives you exactly what you need to decide; for groups or families, you will find it in this very list.

Typical cases round the table: the brother-in-law, the dinner with children, the couple

In the end, Secret Santa almost always lands on one of these profiles. Here is what we would give in each case:

  • The competitive brother-in-law, the one who wins at everything. For him, a strategy game where he can show off: Carcassonne if he wants a board game with some substance, or Ticket to Ride if there are also children he wants to rope into playing. He will love having something new to master.
  • Dinner with children at the table. Here the winner is a game that brings generations together without boring anyone: The Magic Labyrinth or a classic such as ¿Quién Soy?. The little ones have fun and the adults don't drift off to their phones.
  • The couple, a swap between two. If the person will mostly play at home with their partner, choose titles that work well with two; our guide to board games for 2 players lists the ones that work best without a third person.

Why buy it from Híper Ocio

We are a family shop in Albox, Almería, open since 1923 and now run by the fourth generation. We are not a faceless warehouse: behind the counter are people who have spent their whole lives selling games and who, if you tell them who you have drawn and what the limit is, will tell you honestly what to buy. We are members of Toy Planet and an official retailer for LEGO, Devir, Asmodee, Cayro and Panini, so everything that leaves here is official product.

On toys and games we offer free delivery throughout Spain on orders over €49.99, so if you combine two Secret Santa presents you will usually get free delivery. All products come with the three-year legal guarantee and you have 30 calendar days to return anything that is not right. At checkout you can spread the cost with Klarna if you prefer. And if you are unsure about a present, message us on WhatsApp at 623 04 44 20 and we will tell you honestly what we would choose.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you spend on Secret Santa?

Whatever the group decides. In offices and families the usual thing is to set a limit of €10, €20 or €30 and stick to it. Going over does not look better; it makes the others uncomfortable. What matters is getting it right within the agreed bracket, and there are excellent games in all three.

What can I give for €10 that doesn't look cheap?

Go for a well-known card game or a good puzzle. Virus!, ¿Quién Soy? or a 1,000-piece puzzle from Educa or Ravensburger make a very good impression for that money and, what is more, get used for years. Avoid the cheap throwaway novelty.

What should I give if I don't know the person I've drawn?

Go for something with broad appeal, a game that almost everyone likes and that does not require knowing their tastes. Dobble, Virus! or ¿Quién Soy? are choices that are hard to get wrong: well known, fun and suitable for any age. Nobody pulls a face when they open them.

Which game works for a table with both children and adults?

The ones that bring generations together without boring anyone. The Magic Labyrinth, Ticket to Ride: First Journey, Dobble or ¿Quién Soy? work just as well with an eight-year-old as with the grandparents. They are the ones that really liven up a family dinner.

Can I return it if it isn't liked in the end?

Yes. You have 30 calendar days to return any product that is not right, and everything comes with the three-year legal guarantee. If you are unsure before buying, message us and we will help you choose so you don't have to return anything.

Will it arrive in time for Christmas, and is delivery free?

On toys and games we offer free delivery throughout Spain on orders over €49.99. To make sure it arrives in time during the busy season, we recommend not leaving your order until the last day; if you are short of time, message us on WhatsApp at 623 04 44 20 and we will confirm delivery times.
