In Carcassonne , players build roads, cities, and monasteries by placing tiles. When the tiles run out, the player with the most points wins. This game, which won the Spiel des Jahres Award for Best Game of the Year in 2001, has sold millions of copies since then. It's perfectly suited to both veteran and new players, offering a unique mechanic: at the start of the game, there is no board! Players build the "board" by placing tiles, creating a different scenario each time.

Main Features

The rules are very simple: each turn, a player takes a tile from the box and places it anywhere it fits (for example, a road next to another road, a city wall next to another city tile, etc.). Each player has seven figures of a single color, called followers, which mark their territories. When placing a tile, players decide whether to place one of their followers on it. These followers determine who could score points in the city, road, or monastery.

One of the strategic keys to the game is deciding when to place a follower and when to wait, as tokens can only be recovered by closing a territory. This adds an important level of strategy regarding where and when to place followers to maximize points.

Carcassonne is a worldwide success thanks to its tile-laying and area-control mechanics. The random layout of tiles and player decisions ensure high replayability, with each game being different from the last. With rules as simple as playing a tile, placing a figure, and scoring, Carcassonne is easy to learn and quickly brings out the competitive side of any group of players.
