LEGO 2026: how to choose a set by age, budget and type of fan

In recent years LEGO has grown in product lines and audiences to the point where it has become a world in which it is easy to get lost. There is LEGO for babies of a year and a half, there is LEGO for 50-year-old adults who want to build the DeLorean from Back to the Future, and everything in between. This is our honest guide to which LEGO to buy in 2026 depending on who it is for, based on what we are asked most often in the shop and on this year's new releases.

LEGO lines: who each one is for

LEGO DUPLO (1.5-5 years): large, rounded pieces that are safe to put in the mouth. Farms, vehicles, animals, numbers. It is the best introduction to construction play for the youngest children.
LEGO Classic (4+ years): boxes of assorted pieces with no theme, so children can build whatever they can think of. An essential in any home with children.
LEGO City (5-12 years): police, fire brigade, space, farms. The best-selling and most versatile line.
LEGO Friends (6-12 years): more story-driven and emotional, with recurring characters. Horses, houses, cafés, hair salons.
LEGO Ninjago (7-14 years): ninja heroes with an animated series. Battle sets, mechs, dragons.
LEGO Marvel and LEGO DC (7+): superheroes with detailed minifigures and vehicles.
LEGO Star Wars (7-99): the classic that appeals to every age. Ships, film scenes, collector sets.

LEGO Disney (5-99): princess castles, Encanto, Frozen, collector sets for adults.

By age: which LEGO to give without getting it wrong

From 1.5 to 3 years: DUPLO only

Standard LEGO pieces are a choking hazard for children under 3. Any other line is not suitable. Start with DUPLO boxes of animals or vehicles. Budget: €20-€40.

From 4 to 5 years: large DUPLO or a first LEGO Classic

They can now handle standard pieces, but sets with complex instructions are still difficult for them. LEGO Classic (a box of pieces) is the safe bet. Large DUPLO sets (fire station, house) are also a good choice. Budget: €25-€50.

From 6 to 8 years: medium-sized City, Friends and Ninjago sets

The golden age of LEGO. They start following instructions for 100-300 pieces and learn to build on their own. Recommended sets:

LEGO City Police Station, Fire Station, Train Station: 100-200 pieces.
LEGO Friends Heartlake Café, Olivia's House, Riding Stable: 200-500 pieces.
LEGO Ninjago dragons and mechs: 200-400 pieces.

Budget: €30-€70.

From 9 to 11 years: Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, first Technic

This is where collecting begins. Sets of 500-1,000 pieces that already take half an afternoon to build:

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing, AT-AT, film ships: 500-1,000 pieces.
LEGO Harry Potter Charms Class, Common Room, Patronus: 300-800 pieces.
LEGO Technic construction vehicles with mechanical motor: 400-700 pieces.

From 12 to 16 years: complex Technic, premium Star Wars, Architecture

LEGO starts to make sense as a medium-term hobby. Sets of 1,000-2,000 pieces that fill a couple of weekends:

By type of fan

The one who builds and takes apart (free play)

LEGO Classic (boxes of pieces) in a large format. DUPLO too for the youngest. What they enjoy is not the finished set but the freedom.

The one who follows instructions (methodical builder)

City, Friends, Ninjago and Star Wars in sets of 200-800 pieces. They enjoy the process and then play with the result.

The collector

Specific themed sets: Star Wars UCS, Harry Potter castle, Marvel Iron Man, Architecture monuments. They do not take them apart; they display them.

The engineer

LEGO Technic in any format. Real mechanisms, motors, gearboxes. Once they start, they do not stop.

The one who comes to the hobby later (adult)

LEGO Icons or Creator Expert. Sets designed for adults, with detailed instructions, premium packaging and a decorative result. The DeLorean, the typewriter or the Land Rover are perfect starting points.

Practical tips to get it right

Ask what their favourite is before buying a gift. A Friends set for a Star Wars fan will not go down well, however nice it is.
Look at the real age recommendations, not just the minimum. A 9+ set for a 6-year-old can frustrate rather than entertain.
Buy classic LEGO Classic pieces in large quantities as spares. A box of 500 assorted pieces works with any additional set.
If you are torn between two similar sets, choose the more themed one. A specific ship from a film is more enjoyable than a generic vehicle.
