Combi or Side-by-Side Fridge Freezer: Which to Choose in 2026 (Real Prices and Models in Stock)

Updated in September 2026
We reviewed this article on 28 September 2026. The four combis in this selection — VOK EVR-224DEW, Indesit INK2 5322W4E, Svan SC185602ENFX and Corberó CCH200533NFX — are still in stock at our Albox warehouse at the same prices, from €299.99. The made-to-order American fridges from LG and Bosch also remain at the same prices.
We have added a point that was not in the previous version of this guide and that is worth checking in the Almanzora: if the fridge is not going in the kitchen but in a utility room, garage or porch with no climate control, check the climate class on the rating plate. Look for ST or T (up to 38 and 43 °C ambient temperature): a class N appliance in an uncooled utility room in August is the most common cause of the summer breakdowns that reach our workshop.
When a customer walks into the shop on Avenida 28 de Febrero and tells us "my fridge has broken and I need one now", they almost always end up torn between the same two options: a traditional combi, or one of those big American two-door models with a water dispenser that they have seen in an advert. It is a reasonable doubt, because it is not just a question of size: the price, the energy use, the space you need in the kitchen and even the delivery time all change.
We have been selling household appliances in Albox since this was a grocer's shop with a bit of housewares on the side, so this comparison is not theory taken from a spec sheet: it is what we tell a neighbour from Cantoria or Olula del Río when they come in for advice before spending their money. We will use real data from what we have in the warehouse right now, with today's prices, not those of a campaign six months ago.
One clarification before we start: fridges, like the rest of white goods and televisions, are delivered and installed by us with our own van, and we can only guarantee that in the Valle del Almanzora, the Levante Almeriense and Los Vélez. We do not ship large appliances nationwide; if you live outside that area, we will tell you clearly so you do not waste your time.
Combi vs side-by-side (American): the real difference, not the brochure one
A combi is the "normal" fridge: one door on top for the fridge, another below for the freezer, between 170 and 200 cm tall and between 54 and 60 cm wide. It fits in almost any kitchen in Albox or in a village in the Almanzora without moving a partition wall.
A side-by-side (what everyone here calls "the American") has two doors standing next to each other, or four doors if it is a French door. It is around 90 cm wide and needs more clearance from the wall so that it opens properly. It usually comes with a water and ice dispenser, something a normal combi does not include.
The question that really matters is not "which is better?", but "which fits in my kitchen and how many people am I cooking for?". A retired couple almost never needs 600 litres; a family of five with a freezer for the big monthly shop does.
Price: why an American costs three times as much as a combi
This is where the difference really shows. Right now in the shop we have perfectly good combis from €299.99, such as the VOK EVR-224DEW, 170x55 cm in white, up to larger stainless steel models for €400-420. A side-by-side from a well-known brand (LG, Samsung, Bosch, Siemens) starts on our website at around €2,200 and can exceed €4,500 for the four-door models with a screen.
That price difference is not just "premium American brand". A side-by-side has more sheet metal, more insulation, a more complex No Frost system (with two independent cooling circuits in the good models) and, almost always, extra electronics: screen, wifi, dispenser. If all you need is cold and space, nothing more, a well-chosen combi gives you the same practical result for a quarter of the money.
Our selection of combis in stock right now
These are models that we physically have in the Albox warehouse, not "available to order in 15 days":
- VOK EVR-224DEW, 170x55 cm, white, class E — €299.99. The entry-level one, for a flat or a second home.
- Indesit INK2 5322W4E, 185x60 cm, No Frost, white — €349. Proper No Frost (you never have to defrost) at the price of a basic combi.
- Svan SC185602ENFX, No Frost, stainless steel, 295 litres — €359.99. The one most requested when people want stainless steel without overpaying.
- Corberó CCH200533NFX, No Frost, 326 litres, 201x60 cm, stainless steel, Inverter motor — €419.99. The one we recommend for a family of 3-4 people who want real capacity.
Notice a detail that is easily overlooked: the energy class. Most entry-level combis sold today are in class E, not in the higher letters you see on small appliances. This is not a flaw of these brands; it is where the bulk of the market currently sits for fridges of this size and price. If energy use worries you, the Corberó with Inverter motor uses less day to day than a conventional compressor of the same class.
And if you still want a side-by-side? Models available to order
We are not going to tell you not to buy one if that is what you want or what you need for space reasons. We have a catalogue of American fridges from LG, Samsung, Bosch and Siemens, with capacities between 560 and 650 litres. The difference from the combis is availability: because of their size and cost we do not keep these models in the physical warehouse in Albox; they are made to order, normally in 3-5 working days once confirmed.
For example, the LG GSXE81PYBD, 628 litres in stainless steel, is €2,229 to order, and the Bosch KAD93AIDP, 562 litres, is €2,479. If your priority is not waiting a single day, a combi is the honest option; if price is no object and you want that particular format, order it in good time and we will let you know as soon as it reaches the warehouse so we can arrange the installation.
Financing: you do not have to pay all at once
Whether you choose a €300 combi or a €2,400 American, you can pay in instalments with Klarna. You arrange it at checkout, with no extra paperwork in the shop.
Installation and delivery: what we do and what we do not
A fridge is not a box of LEGO: it is heavy, it has to be levelled and, if it is a high-end model with a water connection for the dispenser, it has to be connected. That is why we deliver and fit large appliances and televisions ourselves, with our own van, in Albox, Cantoria, Olula del Río, Zurgena, Fines, Partaloa, Arboleas and the rest of the Valle del Almanzora, the Levante Almeriense and Los Vélez. Outside that area we do not deliver appliances or televisions; we do ship across Spain, with free shipping from €49.99, for toys and small appliances.
If the fridge you buy has a factory fault, you have 30 days to return it under our returns policy. We do not promise free returns or automatic collection from your home: we will explain the specific process when you need it, case by case.
A shopkeeper's advice before you buy
- Measure the space before looking at the price. A 60 cm wide combi will not fit in a 55 cm space, however much you like it. Also measure the height against the kitchen door frame, not just the final space.
- Water dispenser, yes, but check whether it needs a mains connection. Some side-by-sides have an internal tank (no plumbing needed), others need a direct connection to the water pipe. Ask before you decide.
- No Frost whenever you can. The three No Frost combis in our selection (Indesit, Svan, Corberó) never need the freezer to be defrosted. With children at home, the time saved is worth the few euros of difference compared with a static model.
- Clearance from the wall. A side-by-side needs more air at the back and sides so the compressor does not struggle. In small kitchens in the Almanzora, the combi is often not just the cheaper option, it is the only one that really fits properly.
Why buy from Híper Ocio
We are not going to tell you we are the cheapest in Spain, because you will probably find the same model online a few euros cheaper from somewhere with no physical shop or local after-sales service. What we can guarantee, because we have been in Albox since 1923 and I, Antonio Martínez Rosado, am now at the helm as the fourth generation of the family, is that if the fridge gives you a problem in a year and a half, we will be here, on Avenida 28 de Febrero, to see you in person, not in an automated chat. We are an official point of sale for the brands we sell and we stand behind what we install with our own van.
Frequently asked questions
How many litres do I need for a family of 4?
As a general guide, between 300 and 350 litres is usually enough for a family of 3-4 with a weekly shop. If you do a big monthly shop or freeze a lot, go up to 350-400 litres or consider a combi with a large freezer, such as the 326-litre Corberó CCH200533NFX.
Does a combi use much more energy than a higher-class side-by-side?
Not necessarily because of size, but because of energy class and technology. A combi with an Inverter motor in class E can use a similar amount, or even less day to day, than a large side-by-side with a dispenser and screen, simply because it moves less internal air and has fewer electronic components on standby.
Can I buy an American fridge if I live outside the Valle del Almanzora?
You can buy it, but we cannot guarantee delivery and installation outside the Valle del Almanzora, the Levante Almeriense and Los Vélez, because we deliver appliances and televisions with our own van and our own staff, not through an outside carrier. Contact us before buying to confirm whether your town is within the delivery area.
Do made-to-order fridges take long?
Side-by-side models and some specific combis that we do not keep in the Albox warehouse usually take between 3 and 5 working days from order confirmation. We let you know as soon as it arrives so we can arrange the installation day.
Can I pay for the fridge in instalments?
Yes: at checkout you can choose Klarna, which shows you the instalment options available for your purchase before you confirm. You can see the details on our financing page.
What happens if the fridge arrives dented or does not work properly?
You have 30 days from delivery to start a return under our returns policy. Because we install it ourselves, we spot almost any problem right at start-up, in front of you.
