L'Illa Prohibida is a cooperative game designed in 2010 by Matt Leacock, creator of the Pandemic series. In this game, all the players work together towards a common goal: to recover the island's four treasures and escape by helicopter before the waters take everything. Either everyone wins, or everyone loses.

It is one of the best introductions to the cooperative genre, especially recommended for children aged 10 and over and for families who want to discover this type of game.

How to play

To set up the game, the tiles are shuffled and placed face up in a cross shape, creating a different board every game. Each player takes the role of an adventurer with a special power: pilot, explorer, engineer, messenger, navigator or diver. These powers must be used in a coordinated way to help the team.

On each turn, the player may take three actions from the following:

• Move to an adjacent tile
• Shore up a tile that is sinking (turning it face up again)
• Give a treasure card to a teammate on the same tile
• Capture a treasure by handing in 4 cards of the corresponding treasure

After their actions, the player draws cards from the treasure deck and checks the water level meter, which shows how many island cards they must draw. The tiles shown sink (are turned face down) or, if they were already sunk, are removed from the board for good.

Winning and losing conditions

The players win if they manage to capture all four treasures, reach the landing pad and escape by helicopter. They lose if:

• A player is trapped on a tile that disappears and cannot swim to any adjacent tile
• A tile disappears that held the only remaining location for capturing a treasure
• The water level rises to the maximum
• The landing pad sinks

Why it works so well

L'Illa Prohibida encourages constant communication between players. You need to make joint plans, agree on decisions and use each character's special powers at the right moment. The steadily rising water level creates a real sense of urgency that keeps the tension going until the very end. As the board changes every game depending on how the tiles are laid out, replayability is very high.

Once the group has played a couple of games, the difficulty level can be adjusted: novice, normal, elite or legendary.
