You are among the first settlers to arrive on the island of Catan. Soon the first settlements and roads appear, while the fertile lands provide you with abundant raw materials. Little by little, trade flourishes and settlements become cities. But space soon becomes scarce and a fierce dispute over land and resources erupts. You will have to plan shrewdly, trade cunningly, and trust your luck.

How to Play

Catan is played on a modular hexagonal board where players place their settlements and cities. Each hexagon produces a different resource: wood in the forests, clay in the hills, wool in the pastures, grain in the fields, and ore in the mountains. At the beginning of each turn, two dice are rolled: players with settlements adjacent to the hexagon whose number matches the roll receive resources from that territory.

With these resources, more settlements and roads are built, settlements are converted into cities, or development cards are purchased. The goal is to be the first to reach 10 victory points.

Trade, Key to Victory

When a player doesn't have the resource they need, they can negotiate with others. The price of the exchange is set by the players themselves according to their interests at the moment. It is also possible to trade through the ports on the board at more advantageous prices, or resort to the bank by exchanging four cards of one resource for one of any other. Intelligent negotiation is one of the keys to winning.

High Replayability

The modular board changes in every game: the hexagons, numbers, and player positions are always different. The dice have little influence on the final result; what determines victory is efficient resource management and each player's strategic decisions. Catan is perfectly balanced: victories are decided by very narrow margins, maintaining tension until the last moment.
