Carcassonne Expansions Included Devir

Carcassonne Expansiones Reunidas — 4 new modules for the classic tile-laying game

Carcassonne Expansiones Reunidas is an expansion from Devir. Having reviewed it, we think it is a very good choice for groups who already enjoy the base game and want more variety or more players.

Publisher: Devir. Type: expansion.

Carcassonne Expansiones Reunidas brings together four German-themed mini-expansions in a single product: the Leipzig Markets, the Tolls, the Cathedrals of Germany and the Monasteries of Germany. Each module adds new mechanics and components to Klaus-Jürgen Wrede's base game without altering its essence, and all of them can be combined with each other and with any other Carcassonne expansion.

The Leipzig Markets

This mini-expansion replaces the starting tile with 4 new double land tiles representing the city of Leipzig, with four roads leading out of its four districts. When a player completes any of these roads, they may give up the points for the road and send their follower to one of the districts, which will award extra points at the end of the game:

• Carters' district: 1 extra point for each completed road tile
• Goldsmiths' district: 3 extra points for each coat of arms in completed cities
• Bookbinders' district: 4 extra points for each completed cloister
• Tanners' district: 2 extra points for each farm with a shed, pigsty or farmhouse

The Tolls

This module adds a toll tile for each player and new land tiles with groups of travellers. If a player places a tile in the play area without putting a follower on it, they may use their toll token on a road junction. When that road is completed, the player who placed the toll receives bonus points. If there are groups of travellers on the road's tiles, the value of the toll increases, also raising the bonus for all the players involved.

The Cathedrals of Germany

Adds real German cathedrals to the board. These cathedrals have roads, so the player can choose between placing a follower as an archbishop or as a highwayman on the road. Archbishops do not score like the monks of the classic monasteries: instead, they score for the completed road tiles around the cathedral, which opens up new tactical decisions about how and where to place followers.

The Monasteries of Germany

Adds real German monasteries to the game. When placing a follower in one of these monasteries, the player can choose between the role of monk (classic scoring) or abbot. The abbot does not score until the end of the game: it receives 1 point for each adjacent tile in a straight line (vertical or horizontal) from the monastery. Any empty gap in one of the adjacent rows interrupts scoring in that direction, which adds an interesting strategic layer to managing the board.

Compatibility and modularity

The four modules are completely independent of each other: you can use one, several or all of them at once. They are compatible with the Carcassonne base game and with any of its expansions, which makes them a very versatile addition to collections of any size. With just a few extra rules, each module transforms the gameplay experience without increasing complexity excessively.
