We Went Back to Magic for an Afternoon: Jomy's Tournament (Almería)
HiperOcio hasn't had Magic on its shelves for years. We used to stock it, and for a long time we ran tournaments at the shop in Albox. What we have left is some nostalgia and a habit we haven't dropped: we still bring in Magic to order, because we still work with Devir, the distributor that has handled the game in Spain all these years.
So when Jomy told us what he wanted to put together, we didn't have to think twice. Jomy organises as Jomy Tournaments and had an idea very much his own: a tournament with twenty Modern decks as they were in 2015, where nobody brings a deck from home. They are drawn at random every round and nobody plays the same deck twice. He asked us for help with the parts you don't see: the Swiss pairings, the draw of decks with no repeats across the whole tournament, the clock, the standings on each player's phone and a screen for the shop. It was played on Saturday 19 September at Cartinha Brilhante, the Magic shop on Avenida Federico García Lorca in Almería, with sixteen players: four Swiss rounds followed by a best-of-three Top 8. Javi del Pino won, with Affinity in the final and seven different decks over seven rounds. There was not a single argument all afternoon, which at a card tournament is almost news.

We built it in collaboration with Geovisibilidad.com: a poster, the twenty decks with their card and game plan, a simulator to draw your own path to the final, the tables and live standings while the games were being played, and now the report, the photos and the champion with his route to the title.
