What Size Kids' Bike to Choose by Age and Height (2026 Guide)

Choosing the right bike size makes the difference between a child who enjoys pedalling and one who gets frustrated. The key is not just age: what really counts is height and, above all, inseam. Here is the quick table, how to measure at home in 1 minute and which wheel size to choose.

Quick table: age, height and wheel size
| Size | Approximate age | Height | Inseam | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10" no pedals | 2-4 years | 85-105 cm | 30-42 cm | Balance bike |
| 12" | 3-5 years | 95-110 cm | 38-50 cm | With stabilisers |
| 14" | 4-6 years | 100-120 cm | 42-55 cm | With stabilisers |
| 16" | 5-8 years | 110-130 cm | 48-62 cm | Stabilisers (removable) |
| 20" | 7-10 years | 125-145 cm | 58-72 cm | No stabilisers |
This is a guide only. If your child is between two sizes, choose the smaller one: they will have better control and reach the ground properly.
How to measure the inseam in 1 minute
- Your child stands barefoot with their back against the wall.
- Place a book between their legs and slide it up until it touches (like a saddle).
- Measure from the floor to the top of the book: that is the inseam.
- Compare it with the column in the table.
With stabilisers, your child should be able to reach the ground with the soles of their feet. Without stabilisers (learning on their own), it is better if they can reach it with their toes.
No pedals or stabilisers?
The balance bike with no pedals (10") is now the best way to start: your child learns balance first and then moves on to pedals without fear. From the age of 3 they can step up to a 12" with stabilisers, and many skip the stabilisers altogether.
Size by size
- 10" no pedals (2-4 years): balance and coordination (Paw Patrol, Bluey, SuperThings).
- 12" (3-5 years): the first proper bike, with stabilisers.
- 14" (4-6 years): more confident riding, usually with a basket.
- 16" (5-8 years): they start riding without stabilisers, with stronger brakes.
- 20" (7-10 years): a big-kid bike, no stabilisers.

Frequently asked questions
What bike size for a 5-year-old?
The most common are 14" or 16" depending on their height. If they are under 115 cm, 14"; if over 115-120 cm, 16". Measure the inseam to confirm.
At what age do the stabilisers come off?
There is no fixed age: it depends on balance. Many children take them off between 4 and 6 years old, and earlier if they started on a balance bike.
Is it better to buy a bigger size so it lasts longer?
No. A bike that is too big is dangerous: your child cannot reach the ground or control it. Buy their size.
