Barbie presenta una muñeca con síndrome de Down para promover la diversidad e inclusión - Híper Ocio

Barbie presents a doll with Down syndrome to promote diversity and inclusion

Mattel, the maker of the iconic Barbie , has collaborated with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to create a new version of the doll that represents people with Down syndrome. The influencer and writer Mariana de Ugarte, mother of two children with Down syndrome, has been chosen as ambassador of this model in Spain.

The famous Barbie has evolved over the years to reflect the diversity of society and now presents a version with Down syndrome, which is integrated into its Fashionista line. This new doll shows characteristic physical features of people with this condition, such as a more rounded face, smaller ears, a flatter nasal bridge, almond-shaped eyes and palms with a single line.

This Barbie wears a necklace with three arrows that symbolize the third chromosome 21, the "extra" chromosome that genetically causes Down syndrome. The doll's dress has butterflies and the colors yellow and blue, symbolic elements related to this condition. Additionally, she wears pink orthoses, orthopedic ankle braces often used by children with Down syndrome to improve their stability.

Mariana de Ugarte , mother of two children with Down syndrome, will be the ambassador of this Barbie model in Spain. Mariana celebrates this initiative, highlighting its importance in promoting the acceptance of diversity.

Mattel has worked over the years to represent all types of children who play with their dolls. Today's Barbies can be of different heights, sizes, have alopecia or vitiligo, use a wheelchair, use a prosthetic leg or hearing aids. In addition, Barbie has held more than 250 professions throughout its history, becoming a symbol of female empowerment .
