How does LEGO Super Mario work?

The system revolves around an interactive Mario figure (or Luigi, or Peach) with LCD screens on its face, chest, and sole. When Mario "jumps" on enemies, coins, or special blocks in the constructed stage, sensors read QR codes hidden in each piece, and the figure reacts with sounds and expressions from the original video game. Is the Starter Course necessary for it to work?

Yes, absolutely. The Mario figure (or Luigi/Peach) only comes in the Starter Courses. Expansion sets (Power-Up Packs, Worlds, Boss Battles) are designed to extend the experience with the figure you already have — they don't work on their own without Mario. If you're giving LEGO Super Mario as a gift for the first time, make sure to include a Starter Course.

Mario, Luigi, or Peach: which one to choose?

Any of them. All three are independent figures with their own Starter Courses. Each has its own colors and specific animations, but the functions are the same. If you buy two figures (Mario + Luigi, for example), two people can play simultaneously in the same stage.

Does it need batteries or a mobile app?

Batteries yes (AA, included in the Starter Course). Mobile app optional: the LEGO Super Mario app adds extra modes (records, challenges), but the sets work without a mobile phone. The sensors and reactions are in the figure itself.

What age are they recommended for?
