Codenames: Harry Potter

Codenames: Harry Potter is the official edition of the classic word and deduction game set in the Harry Potter universe. The Prefects of each house must guide first-year students through the halls of Hogwarts, giving one-word clues to help them find their house's cards before the other teams, while avoiding closed doors and, above all, Argus Filch.

For 4 to 8 players, ages 10 and up, with games lasting about 15 minutes. Published by Devir in Spanish.

How to Play

The board displays a grid of face-up cards with words or images from the Harry Potter universe: characters, spells, creatures, objects, and iconic locations. Each team has a Prefect who knows which cards belong to their house and must give a single one-word clue followed by a number to indicate how many cards correspond to that clue.

First-year students debate, reason, and point to the cards they believe match the clue. The goal is to find all of your own house's cards before your rivals, without touching other houses' cards or, especially, the Filch card, which instantly eliminates the team.

What's New Compared to the Original Codenames

This edition is not just the original game with a Harry Potter theme. It incorporates several new features that enrich the experience:

Special House Abilities

Each of the four Hogwarts houses has a unique ability that modifies the rules and opens up new strategies during the game. Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff play differently, adding variety and replayability to the game.

House Cup

The game includes a scoring system for multi-game play that keeps track of each house's victories over several sessions, determining which house wins the House Cup at the end.

Words Mode, Images Mode, or Both

The 198 cards are double-sided: one side with words and the other with images from the Harry Potter universe. Players can choose to play with only words, only images, or combine both sides to increase difficulty and variety.

Game Contents

  • 198 double-sided cards (words and images from the Harry Potter universe)
  • Game board with the card grid
  • Prefect cards for each house (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff)
  • Special ability cards per house
  • House Cup markers for multi-game play
  • Rulebook in Spanish

Words and Characters from the Harry Potter Universe

The cards include iconic elements from the entire saga: characters like Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Cho Chang, Lucius Malfoy, or Aragog; spells like Wingardium Leviosa or Petrificus Totalus; magical creatures, objects, locations, and references that fans of the saga will instantly recognize. The theme is complete and faithful to J.K. Rowling's universe.

Frequently Asked Questions about Codenames: Harry Potter

Is it necessary to know the original Codenames to play?

No. The game includes a complete rulebook and is entirely standalone. Those who know the original will learn in seconds; those who don't can learn in the first game without difficulty.

Do you need to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy it?

It's not essential, but fans of the saga will enjoy it much more by recognizing the characters, spells, and references. The image mode is especially accessible for players who don't know the universe well.

Can it be played with fewer than 4 players?

The game is designed for a minimum of 4 players, as it needs at least two teams with a Prefect each. It works perfectly with 4 players; with 6 or 8, the group dynamic is even more fun.

Is it suitable for 10-year-olds?

Yes. The recommended age is 10+ and the game is accessible for that age, especially if the children know the Harry Potter saga. The rules are simple and the games are short, which makes it ideal for maintaining attention.

What is the difference between word mode and image mode?

In word mode, the cards show names of characters, spells, and elements from the Harry Potter universe. In image mode, the cards show photographs or illustrations of those same elements. Image mode is more visual and intuitive; word mode requires more knowledge of the saga. Combining both increases difficulty and variety.

Do the house abilities change the game much?

Yes. Each house has an ability that significantly modifies the rules, making each game different depending on which houses are playing. This adds a strategic layer that the original Codenames does not have.

Who this game is ideal for

Codenames: Harry Potter is perfect for:

  • Harry Potter fans who want a board game with the saga's theme.
  • Families with children aged 10 and up looking for a dynamic and easy-to-learn board game.
  • Groups of friends who enjoy party games with a strategic component.
  • Regular players who already know the original Codenames and want a version with new features.
  • Gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or any occasion for fans of the saga.

Comparison with the Original Codenames

Vlaada Chvátil's original Codenames is one of the best-selling and most awarded board games of the last decade. This Harry Potter edition retains the core mechanics but adds three elements that clearly differentiate it:

  • House abilities that do not exist in the original.
  • House Cup system for multi-game play.
  • Double-sided cards (words and images) that double the game possibilities.

It's an edition that offers its own value beyond the theme, recommended even for those who already own the original.
