Catan: Traders & Barbarians is the third large-box expansion for Klaus Teuber's legendary game. Instead of simply adding new rules to the base game, it offers five completely different scenarios, each with its own mechanics, objectives, and challenges. Additionally, it includes optional variants and special rules for playing with only two players.

The Five Scenarios

1. The Fishermen of Catan

The sea and lakes of Catan are teeming with fish. You can fish in the central lake and coastal areas without a port, earning fish tokens that act as special currency: use them to get resources, move the robber, or buy development cards. Managing the best fishing grounds becomes a fundamental strategic element.

2. The Great River of Catan

Two rivers cross the island and introduce gold as a special resource, exchangeable for any other commodity. The player with the most gold becomes the Rich Settler (+1 victory point); whoever has the least, the Poor Settler (-1 point). These titles change hands throughout the game, creating a constant chase dynamic.

3. The Caravan Route

The Catan desert transforms into a prosperous oasis, the starting point for lucrative trade routes. Players form camel caravans that visit settlements and cities, generating additional benefits at each stop. The more extensive your caravan network, the more powerful your economy becomes.

4. The Barbarian Attack

For the first time in Catan, players must cooperate to survive. Hordes of barbarians threaten the island, and if not collectively defeated, everyone loses. Within this forced cooperation, you still compete to be the most outstanding hero and earn the greatest rewards. The balance between defending and expanding is key.

5. The Campaign (For Experienced Players Only)

The most complex scenario combines elements from all the previous ones in a multi-phase experience. Players go through different historical stages of Catan, simultaneously managing trade, exploration, defense, and urban development. It can last several hours and requires constant concentration and adaptability.

Special Variants

• The Friendly Robber - The robber cannot steal from players with few victory points, making games more balanced.
• The Event Card Deck - Replaces dice with a deck that reproduces the exact statistical distribution, eliminating the element of chance.
• The Harbor Master - New strategic objective: controlling the most harbors is worth 2 victory points (game to 11 points).

Two-Player Mode

One of the most appreciated innovations of this expansion is the special rules for playing with only two players. A neutral player controlled by automatic rules is introduced, maintaining competition and tension without the need for a third person.
