Gone is the agrarian society founded by Viking settlers. The 21st century has arrived in Catan, and in addition to traditional resources, the island's inhabitants need energy to maintain the growth and prosperity of their civilization. Pollution from fossil fuels is a growing threat that causes natural disasters and inhibits resource production. Cleaner energy technologies are available, but they are more expensive to build. The choice and responsibility are yours.

A Decision that Changes the Game

Players must decide whether to invest in new renewable energies or opt for cheaper fossil fuels, risking an early disaster for the entire island. Each turn, players draw event tokens from a bag and place them on their corresponding marker on the board. Once the marker is full, events are triggered: resource blockades, penalties to players, and consequences that affect everyone.

Catan Energies builds on the mechanics of classic Catan and takes them to another level:

• Personal ecological footprint - Each player manages their environmental impact on their individual board
• Fossil fuel power plants - Cheaper, but increase global pollution
• Renewable energy power plants - More expensive, but sustainable and with strategic advantages
• Event system - Tokens drawn from a bag that trigger unpredictable consequences
• Double victory condition - 10 victory points or be the player with the most renewable plants if the event tokens run out
