How to Play Catan

Catan is played on a modular hexagonal board where players place their settlements and cities. Each hex produces a different resource: wood in the forests, brick in the hills, wool in the pastures, grain in the fields, and ore in the mountains. At the beginning of each turn, two dice are rolled: players with settlements adjacent to the hex whose number matches the roll receive resources from that territory.

With these resources, players build more settlements and roads, upgrade settlements to cities, or buy development cards. The goal is to be the first to reach 10 victory points, which are obtained by building, achieving the longest road, the largest army, or through development cards.

Trade, Key to Victory

When a player doesn't have the resource they need, they can trade with others. The price of the exchange is set by the players themselves according to their interests at the moment. It's also possible to trade through the board's ports at more advantageous prices, or resort to the bank by exchanging four cards of one resource for one of any other. Intelligent negotiation is one of the keys to winning.

High Replayability

The modular board changes in each game: the hexes, numbers, and player positions are always different. The dice have little influence on the final outcome; what determines victory is efficient resource management and each player's strategic decisions. Catan is perfectly balanced: victories are decided by very close margins, maintaining tension until the last moment.

The Among Friends Mini-Expansion

This mini-expansion adds guild favor tokens that players earn by performing good deeds: moving the robber without harming anyone or giving a raw material card to another player. Depending on the guild, these tokens provide different benefits throughout the game, adding a layer of diplomacy and cooperation to the game.

Santa Claus and The Easter Bunny

These two mini-expansions incorporate a new hex and a special character each. Both Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny lend their help to players in exchange for wool: if a player offers them this resource during their turn, they can move the figure to a hex to distribute gifts among the settlers in that territory and remove the robber from there.
